This article will attempt to clarify those matters. The Attack action allows you to make an attackbut not all attacks require the Attack action. In its basic form, the Attack action allows you to make one attack generally a weapon attack against an enemy. Per the rules on movement, you can move before or after attack, or move both before and after the attack. The attack action is not the only way you can attack.

If you cast Eldritch Blastyou make a ranged spell attack against a creature. Shocking Grasp gives you a melee spell attack against a creature. Not all spells work that way, however. Instead, it modifies how you attack — for the duration of the spell, instead of using your Strength as the modifier for your attacks, you use your spellcasting ability score normally Wisdom for druids.

Similarly Magic Stone allows you or others to throw the enchanted pebbles using your spellcasting attack bonus rather than their regular attack bonus. However, the actual attacking is done by taking the Attack action, and so can be modified by Extra Attack, Flurry of Blows and other such abilities. Another wrinkle are the spells which have an ongoing effect. Vampiric Touch is one such spell — it allows you to make a melee spell attack when you cast it so you get an attack as part of the Cast a Spell action as abovebut the spell persists for up to a minute.

Is this an attack action? A few require the use of your bonus action instead. Just as a side note, all attacks are described in terms such as ranged spell attack or melee weapon attack.

[5E] A Rogue "unnerf" - Extra Attack

Each word means something. The first word is either ranged or melee. Melee attacks also can be against any creature within your reach generally 5 feetwhile ranged attacks can be made against any creature within the stated range of the attack. In some cases, an attack form has two ranges; attacks at the longer range suffer disadvantage.

The second word if present generally indicates what modifiers you uses for the attack. Spell attacks use your spellcasting ability modifier, while weapon attacks use Strength melee weapon or Dexterity ranged weapon. There are exceptions to this depending on the spell or type of weapon.

Incidentally, unarmed combat is generally still considered a weapon attack — the weapon being your fists or feet! The others are saving throw and ability check.

Attack rolls are different because a natural 1 is an automatic miss, while a natural 20 is an automatic hit and a critical hit.

And finally, just a last clarification thanks to Medix2 for pointing it out ; the Weapon bond feature does allow for you to bond with up to two weapons, but only one weapon can be summoned at a time PHB p. Once you have bonded a weapon to yourself, you can't be disarmed of that weapon unless you are incapacitated. If it is on the same plane of existence, you can summon that weapon as a bonus action on your turn, causing it to teleport instantly to your hand.

You can have up to two bonded weapons, but can summon only one at a time with your bonus action. So, instead, you could use your bonus action to summon one weapon, then attack up to 4 times with it.

The best way to cover those misconceptions is to break down the actual Sneak Attack rule, pointing out where people seem to get things wrong. Note that, because the rule specifies that the character has to hit to deal the extra damage, a character with multiple attacks does not need to declare Sneak Attack prior to the attack roll; declaring after a successful hit is sufficient, but once declared, the character cannot change that declaration.

Lastly, since Sneak Attack damage is expressed in dice, they are multiplied on a critical hit. Thus, javelins, spears, hand-axes, light hammers, and tridents cannot be used to make Sneak Attacks, even though they can be used to make ranged attacks — they are all listed as melee weapons on the weapon charts. The dagger, however, can be used to make sneak attacks, as it is a finesse weapon.

The following are finesse weapons, since they contain the finesse property in the weapon list:. Note that, because being a ranged weapon is defined by the weapon chart and not by the mode of attack used with the weapon, finesse weapons like the dagger can still benefit from Sneak Attack when used to make ranged attacks.

Likewise, a ranged weapon used to make a melee attack typically as an improvised melee weapon can benefit from Sneak Attack. Nothing in the rule for Sneak Attack requires the rogue to use a weapon with which he is proficient, nor use it in a specific manner. Single-classed rogues can effectively use Sneak Attack with any allowed weapon, but multi-classed rogues will almost always choose rapier as their weapon of choice, since it has the highest base damage.

Multi-classed rogues with the Crossbow Expert feat might choose to use the heavy crossbow instead, as long as they are at least Medium size. However, note that in this situation, you are also not considered to actually have disadvantage on the roll either, so if your target has an active enemy within 5 feet of it, you still get to apply your Sneak Attack, if you hit.

In addition to the above, the Swashbuckler archetype adds yet another qualification for Sneak Attack, as part of the Rakish Audacity ability. All the other rules for the Sneak Attack class feature still apply to you. The Swashbuckler feature is in addition to, not in place of, the general conditions for Sneak Attack in the Rogue feature. Most importantly, note that the Swashbuckler feature mentions nothing about disadvantage — this means that a Swashbuckler with disadvantage who can maneuver into a position to attack without any other creature other than the target within 5 feet can still Sneak Attack.

He always did tend to be a melee cleric though. He loves to wade into combat and dish out the hurt by hand and use his spells for buffing before a fight and healing mostly afterwards. When it came to 5E he was excited about the War Cleric but quickly lost his excitement. Thread starter dnd4vr Start date Aug 16, While looking over the classes, it occured to me that Rogues are the only "battler" class Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Monk, Ranger, and Rogue that don't every get the Extra Attack feature. The other five classes all get it at 5th level. Is there some reason behind this? They are limited to one sneak attack per turn, so it isn't as though they could get more sneak attacks or something.

I thought maybe one of their archetypes would get it at least, like College of Swords for Bards, but there wasn't anything there either.

While enough rogue nerfing has been going on, would it be crazy to unnerf them a bit and allow Extra Attack at some point? If not 5th level like most others, except Bardthen 6th? Thoughts, anyone? Extra attack would be a significant buff to rogues, since it would increase their chance of landing at least one hit in a combat round and getting to apply sneak attack.

The rogues biggest drawback compared to most other weapon using classes is that they don't have any limited use nova abilities.
