The ABS light on a Vehicles is designed to alert the driver to potential problems with any part of the anti-lock braking system. The ABS computer continuously monitors a number of sensors throughout the Vehicles in order to ensure that the anti-lock braking system is functioning properly Vehicles all times.

When the ABS computer detects a problem with the system, it stores a trouble code in its internal memory and turns on the ABS light. Take the vehicle to a mechanic and have the anti-lock brake system checked and any necessary repairs made. Usually this will turn off the ABS light, but not always. If not, proceed to Step 2. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "Run" position the position right before the one used to engage the engine.

Locate the DIC control panel on the dashboard in front of the driver's seat under the speedometer. Open your Explorer's hood and loosen the retaining nut on the negative battery cable clamp using a socket wrench and a 10 millimeter socket.

Check the dash to verify that the ABS light has gone out. This process also resets all trouble codes in the Explorer's computer, so all other warning lights will reset as well.

Social Groups. Mark Forums Read.If you've ever modified a car with smaller or larger tires or, perhaps, a different final-drive gearyou've immediately screwed up your speedometer. This is, of course, annoying, but for modern cars with a digital speed sensor, there's a relatively easy way to fix it.

Our pal Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained shows you how in this new video, using his own Honda S as an example. This particular fix should work for any car with an electronic speedometer—so, not your '67 Camaro with a gauge driven by a cable coming off the transmission.

You'll need to buy a speedometer recalibration device to perform this fix—Fenske uses one called Yellow Boxbut you can find other options to suit your application. Fixing your inaccurate speedometer will also require some real-world testing to determine the percentage of error introduced by your new tires or gearing.

For that, you'll need a GPS-connected device to verify speed—a phone app, a portable navigation system, or something like a VBox should do the trick. Once you've got a percentage to work with, plug the calibration device into the speed sensor—in Fenske's case, attached to the transmission—and follow the instructions to program in the correct amount of compensation.

As an added benefit, this fix will also make your odometer accurate, since it uses the same sensor that feeds the speedometer. You'll need to be a little handy to make this work, but the end result is worth it—and it's way easier than the old days, where you'd have to fiddle with speedometer gears and hope you did the math correctly. After all, you don't want to get pulled over for speeding when your car tells you you're doing the speed limit.

A common problem for this malfunction is when the car owner recently replaced the battery, or perhaps jump-stared their vehicle, which in both cases could have caused an electrical spike that made the speedometer go berserk. See the simple reset solution in the video below, demonstrated on a Chrysler Sebring. Other make and models may have a similar solution.

I had to have the car jumped and I found that my speedometer wasn't working. I thought I had broken something and that it would be expensive to fix, but instead I didn't have to pay a single penny!

It was so easy! I'm glad I looked online first before I brought it into a shop! Now my parents don't even have to know it was broken in the first place haha! Thank you so much, it really was extremely easy! It took some playing around with when to put in the key, but other than that, very simple!

How to Reset the ABS Light on Vehicles

I hope this is the right subforum for this And double big apologies if nothing I say here makes sense. I've had a "check engine" light on for a while and the ABS light too.

I was happy that the code indicated the VSS because I'd been googling my "symptoms" like crazy and after seeing a lot of random internet posts describing the same problems, the VSS kept coming up as a common issue on Rangers. I've been driving the truck around town with the jerking, putting it into 2nd when I had to while waiting to get the sensor swapped out.

I finally got the sensor switched out tonight had to wait for a friend to do it because I have no tools. The guy who switched it said the old sensor wasn't connected because the wires had been cut at some point and loosely taped back. He replaced it and got it all connected. I drove it slowly for a couple of blocks but there didn't seem to be any change.

So, my questions are these: Do I need to take the truck out and get it up to higher speeds I was driving 25 at the most to really know if the sensor is the only fix it needed?

If the truck is doing the jerk thing and I give it a lot of gas to get it to shift on, could I possibly be exacerbating some kind of transmission problem?

My biggest fear is that there is some simple problem that's cheap to fix going on here and that I'm going to turn it into a major problem by destroying the transmission or something else pricey like that. I hope this all makes sense? I'm a total auto noob, but willing to admit it and dying to learn.

Ford Ranger odometer fix!

I love, love, love my truck and want to treat her right, so any guidance here is appreciated. Sticks at zero, then suddenly jumps to around 40 or more when I speed up. Last edited by llynn; at PM. Reason: extra info. I'm thinking about trying some of the Lucas Transmission Fix stuff.

Is that a bad idea? I'm so paranoid about making a bad situation worse. If the trans fluid is reading max, I need to drain some before I can add the Lucas stuff, right? Do I need to get under the truck for that or is it possible to suck some out with a turkey baster or something?

Heck if your RPMs start getting up there with no gear change, you can ease off the gas. But to me your post describes a diagnosis and repair.

Reset not necessary. Unless you're talking about erasing the code. The code may stay for awhile after a repair until the circuit checks out after multiple self tests. The speedometer is an important part of the car engine as it indicates the speed of your vehicle while on the road. A faulty speedometer can cause major driving issues, which can lead to speed-related accidents or an unnecessary speeding ticket from the police.

As with any brand of vehicle, Ford vehicles are susceptible to speedometer problems. The PSOM includes the odometer and the speedometer, which are electronically controlled by a programmable microprocessor. The module works by receiving speed signals from the Differential Speed Sensor DSS and converts the signal input to the standard 8, pulses per mile output.

The most common issues with the Ford speedometer are when it bounces back and forth continuously while the vehicle is being driven. Another problem that might arise is when the speedometer doesn't move at all. This indicates that the car's speedometer is dead. Speedometer issues typically occur when major changes are made to the Ford vehicle.

These include changing fuel types from diesel to unleaded gasoline for exampleand changing tires, as the vehicle's speed performance varies depending upon these two aspects. It is not uncommon then for you to experience a faulty speedometer after having had your tires changed, for example.

The conversion constant needed to calculate your instantaneous speed is different and has yet to be determined. If you think you are having problems with your Ford speedometer because of tire or fuel changes, the the best way to solve it is by resetting the PSOM. You can do this by pressing the SELECT button found on the upper right corner of the speedometer, then you select zero for the trip odometer.

It is also a must to change the speedometer's internal conversion constant if you have changed tire sizes because this will enable your speedometer to calculate your speed accurately. Because the Ford speedometer is equipped in a full-device module, the only way to fix a broken speedometer is by complete replacement.

The PSOM devices can be quite expensive because of their computer parts. Hence, it is important check out your speedometer's performance as well as the odometer calculations and provide the right conversion constants so that they will not only be able to provide correct calculations, but also avoid incompatibility problems with any new changes made to the vehicle.
