And we can use that information to make an informed decision as to which oil we want to select for our engines. But, the truth is, like all things in life, motor oils are NOT all created equal. And some oils are simply better than others, no matter what their zinc levels are.

Anyone would have to be delusional to think otherwise. Some folks, who REALLY believe the notion that more zinc in their oil will provide more wear protection, often throw a tizzy fit and get very nasty when test data shows a low zinc oil providing better wear protection than a high zinc oil. But, the fact is, behavior like that will NOT change the facts regarding what oils provide excellent wear protection and what oils do not.

That way, all the oils are on an even playing field. However, true zinc lovers will no doubt be disappointed, because not all high zinc oils tested well, even though they all have plenty of zinc.

And it was also found that ZDDP above 2, ppm, started attacking the grain boundaries in the iron, resulting in camshaft spalling. The tests were repeated multiple times for each oil, and even though all the results for each oil were consistent within a few percent, those results were averaged to arrive at the most accurate and representative final psi numbers shown below. Provides excellent protection from metal to metal contact.

These claims were obviously created by the Marketing Department with no regard for what this oil can actually do. And it ranked only 34th out of the 40 oils examined here. Once again, here is an oil with high levels of zinc that DID NOT help it perform very well, even among other high zinc oils.

Buyer beware. Motor oils are among the worst products for false advertising. That is NOT a typo. And the values listed below are all just the way they came back from the Lab.

If you average the zinc and phos values of this Summit Racing Oil, you come up with ppm. But, for quick and dirty mental calculations, you can just figure the ZDDP value as approximately half way between the zinc and phos levels. And that is precisely what we see here.

Just the opposite of what was promised. So, the results above show 2 distinct things: 1. My tester and test procedure have no problem at all showing excellent performing high zinc oils.

Therefore, no one can justifiably argue that my testing somehow works against high zinc oils.First, narrow the options down by choosing the closest-related category to your question. What are the benefits of using racing oil versus regular passenger car oil? Its primary role is to prevent metal-to-metal contact between engine parts by forming a protective film.

Despite being referred to as zinc, ZDDP also contains phosphorus, which helps to perform the anti-wear function in the motor oil. With ever increasing limits on emissions, automobile manufacturers have tightened emission control systems on newer vehicles.

This is one of several factors considered when the American Petroleum Institute API sets standards for motor oil with zinc. Because phosphorus can poison a vehicle's emission system, the level of zinc is lower for current motor oil. What is the controversy surrounding the amount of zinc in motor oil? The controversy exists as a result of many hands-on car enthusiasts and engine experts belief that lower levels of zinc in API SN and SM motor oils can cause excessive wear in older style push-rod and flat-tappet engines.

They hold this belief despite the fact that all new motor oil classifications are intended to be backward compatible.

Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil contains. Keep in mind that zinc additives are corrosive above certain levels and can harm your engine. Valvoline VR1 racing oil is conventional, non-synthetic racing oil.

Is there enough or too much? When looking for oil or oil additive products to add to your engine, you may wonder where zinc comes in. Here is what you need to know about zinc and motor oil. There are four options for you to choose from:. If you want to get better performance and longer life out of your car, you should put in something superior to conventional oil, especially if you do a lot of urban stop-and-go driving which can be hard on your engine.

All the motor oil you put in your car has some zinc, but typically very low levels. The reason you have zinc in your motor oil is to protect the camshaft. The camshaft allows the oil to get into the engine by pushing open the engine valves as it rotates while you are driving. When you drive at high speeds, a great deal of pressure can build up between the lobes of the camshaft and the parts that press against them, called followers. At this high pressure, motor oil squeezes out and can wear down the parts.

Zinc ZDDP and ZDTP is especially useful for cars with flat-tappet camshafts, which means a lot of classic cars, hot rods and older muscle cars need zinc more than other cars.

Higher zinc levels in oil typically are for performance cars on the whole.

When some of that zinc turns to ash and travels down your exhaust pipe, it ends up in your catalytic converter, and zinc ash is not good for catalytic converters. In fact, enough zinc ash in your catalytic converter can reduce its life.

Do you use zinc in your oil or not? If you have a newer car, this should not be a problem. Stock engines for new cars are designed with a lower zinc content of modern oils in mind, and you should use them without excess wear on your camshaft.

However, if you are using an older car or a custom car with non-stock parts again, classic cars, hot rods, older muscle carsyou may need greater zinc content than current oils offer. Ignoring the problem could quickly lead to a worn-out camshaft. So, how do you resolve this problem?

What can you do? The solution is to add a zinc supplement to your oil. This is a real ZDDP-containing oil supplement you can add to modern conventional oil in your engine to make that oil work like the zinc-rich oil of old you need. With this supplement, you can increase your engine life and confidently use the motor oils modern cars use. Posted on August 1st, by thomas liquori.

Synthetic oil is treated to have fewer impurities and operates much better than conventional oil at extreme temperatures. It is treated for more impurities than conventional oil but cheaper than fully synthetic oil. If you feel you are getting sufficient performance with synthetic blend, you may want to save a few bucks rather than go full synthetic.

This type of oil contains leak prevention additives, seal conditioners and other products to help extend the life of your engine. It also costs more, but if you are trying to squeeze the most life possible out of an older car, this is the type of oil you should use.

Zinc is a nutrient that plays a vital role in immune system response, wound healing, synthesizing proteins and DNA, and many other bodily functions.

The human body does not store zinc, so a person has to get enough from their daily diet. They can also take supplements, if necessary. In this article, learn about the benefits of zinc and which foods to eat to ensure adequate intake. It is well known that of all food types, oysters contain the most zinc per serving. However, most people get their zinc from poultry and red meat.

Food manufacturers may also fortify foods with zinc to help a person meet their daily requirements. Examples of foods high in zinc include :. Without proper planning, vegan and vegetarian diets can result in deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin B, iron, calciumiodine, vitamin Dand zinc. Vegetable based zinc sources are not as bioavailable as animal based sources, which means that the body does not absorb zinc from vegetarian sources as effectively.

This means that male vegans and vegetarians may need to eat about If a person chooses to supplement their diet with zinc, they may wish to avoid taking it at the same time as supplements of calciumcopperfolic acidiron, and magnesium. This is because these nutrients can affect how the body absorbs zinc.

According to the NIHmost children and adults consume enough zinc. Older adults, however, may not get the recommended intake. Doctors do not have an easy blood test to determine if a person is zinc deficient. Conversely, a person can also experience zinc toxicity from excess zinc supplementation. However, eating foods high in zinc — even in large amounts — does not usually cause symptoms. Meat based products are usually higher in bioavailable zinc.

If a person does not eat meat, they may need to make an effort to increase their zinc intake through eating beans, seeds, and oats, among other zinc-containing foods. Although zinc deficiencies are rare in the United States, people should always speak to a doctor if they have concerns about their nutrient intake.

Foods high in zinc For vegans and vegetarians Benefits Deficiency Summary If you buy something through a link on this page, we may earn a small commission. In several important ways, classic car engines are different than modern car engines. They are lower revving, they have larger metal-to-metal tolerances, and often have cork or rope seals.

They also require more anti-wear additives to prevent premature wear. For these reasons, the best oil for classic cars requires a little more thought than just grabbing your favorite brand off the parts-store shelf.

Most vintage and classic automotive engines have a push rod-operated valvetrain driven by a flat-tappet camshaft. In order to prevent premature cam and lifter wear, there must be an adequate amount of anti-wear additives. This was not a problem 30 or 40 years ago, but for environmental reasons, the quantity of an additive called ZDDP has been reduced significantly in modern oils. It's physical and functional properties make it ideal for use in oils and greases to help control oxidation and corrosion.

Levels for ZDDP in oils used to be 1, to 1, parts-per-million. Since the early nineties, manufacturers have been reducing this number. Late-model engines with roller camshafts have considerably less camshaft lobe friction, so they don't require high levels of zinc. Without the correct amount of ZDDP, older, push rod-style motors will wear prematurely.

The damage may not happen overnight, but over months or years, the lack of protection will prematurely wear cams, lifters, and other internal parts. The reason the ZDDP content was lowered in motor oil was to prevent the possible fouling of the catalytic converters.

Seems that the zinc and phosphates contained in it coats the active substrate in converters, which may contaminate it and decrease its life expectancy. During the break-in period of a freshly rebuilt engine, lack of proper lubrication can be fatal to internal parts, especially camshaft and lifters. After rebuilding an older engine, either add a ZDDP supplement or use a racing oil, which has a higher level of phosphorous in it.

After the engine break-in period you can go away from the racing oil if you like. Most engine and engine component manufacturers recommend a zinc and phosphorus content of more than 1, PPM for break-in, and most will void warranties if this minimum is not found in the oil sample you supply when returning broken parts for warranty. Today, many of the well-known oil companies are offering oils formulated for vintage and classic cars. These oils balance ZDDP, detergent levels, and corrosion inhibitors.

Castrol markets a "Classic XL" line of retro oils. Recommended for pre cars, their multi-grade 20W is formulated with high-quality mineral oils plus selected additives for older technology and classic car engines. Also in the "Classic XL" line is a 30W oil for pre vintage and classic cars. This mono-grade oil can also be used in most types of manually-operated gearboxes. Lucas "Hot Rod and Classic Car" motor oil is designed for use in all classic cars, sports cars, and muscle cars without catalytic converters.
